February 28, 2022

The meeting was opened at 12:05pm on Zoom by President Klark Swan. Darus Trutna led the pledge of Allegiance.  Klark provided the thought of the day- “There’s a lot going on in the world right now, I am proud that Rotary continues the good work that they do. Unfortunately, 8 frontline workers on the Afghan polio frontline were recently slain while conducting their duties.”

March Madness – starts tomorrow.  Arny King will be providing more information soon.

Upcoming election:  Nominees include: President-elect Annalise von Borstel, Treasurer – Kris Marquez has offered to continue her service.  Nancy Dean – Secretary.  We will hold an election with two weeks to dispute if you have any objections.

TODAY’S SPEAKER: Dr. Peter Stoll, Humboldt County Office of Education, (HCOE) Coordinator of Prevention and Intervention Services.   Dr. Stoll is a Behavioral Psychologist by training.  He formerly worked in special education but he found that much of this work was reactive to situations developing. Unfortunately, you can’t really help if you are not being preventive in your work.  That’s what he is doing now.  Their focus is on ‘Restorative Practices’ – History has shown that punishment is the least effective way to establish lasting change. Their goal is to provide solutions /work that are 80% prevention & 20% responsiveness.

In the classroom the goal is to create emotional safety, encourage respect, teach empathy and provide a space where all students feel like they belong. Behaviour changes come more often when those in authority do things with them rather than to them or for them. Statistically students who receive just one suspension are 5X more likely to drop-out of school. They are also 3X more likely to be involved in the juvenile justice system within one year. Bullying is often a lack of understanding so it’s important to work with kids to understand, protect and support each other.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:55pm.

TODAY’S SPEAKER: Anthony Stubbs talked about the club’s Youth Literacy Project. The identified goal at the board’s strategic planning meeting was to focus on youth literacy, building on the dictionary project we have had in place for many years.  Anthony said that according to the Humboldt County Office of Education about 50% of Kindergarten thru 3rd graders are reading below their age level.  The committee selected a book to distribute to 3rd graders, “Dictionary for a better world.” This will replace the dictionaries we have distributed in the past.  It is geared for ages 8 – 12. Woolford Scholarships– Recipients have to attend HSU and be a full-time graduate student. There is excess money in this account right now as prior to Fred there was not a chairman awarding the money.  This year there were 4 winners.  3- $2,500 and 1- $1,000. This money is managed by the Humboldt Area Foundation and the amount is also based on the interest earned in the account.

Hegy Scholarships – These scholarships are awarded to graduate students enrolled full-time at Humboldt State University in the fields of engineering, mathematics, science and architecture.

Harvey Harper Scholarship– must attend a trade school or junior college in the automotive field.  Priority is given to EHS students, then College of the Redwoods. There have not been a lot of applicants in this field historically. It’s a $1,000 scholarship.

The pandemic massively changed things.  All distributions are now outside- walk up or drive-up distributions.  They have had to serve a lot more people.  They are now serving 16,000 people per month, compared to 12,000 before the pandemic. Food for People currently has about 25 staff members and partners with about 100 organizations in Humboldt for different programs.  Food prices are rising quite a bit, there have been food shortages in some areas.  They are trying to secure food now, at a decent price point.

The new faciility building is coming along. The old facility has been completely removed.  The City of Eureka has helped them find temporary facilities.  They are currently spread out and overhead has increased quite a bit because of all of the leases.  The construction has been delayed because of COVID supply issues, but is expected to start in the next few months and they hope to move in by the end of 2022.  The budget has increased as prices have risen as much as 45%.  The total building is estimated to cost 5.6 million. TODAY’S SPEAKER:

BOB ROGERS IS A MEMBER of Rotary of Sebastopol and a Past District Governor. He is a polio survivor.  While he was District Governor he organized a pedal for polio event to raise money for polio. It raised $140,000 for polio which was matched to become $420,000 thanks to the Gates Foundation.  He is a retired airline pilot.

World Polio Day was yesterday.  When Rotary started working on polio 35 years ago, 125 countries had polio.  Today two countries have it, (see chart). It is very difficult to access those two countries Afghanistan and Pakistan.  Polio tends to attack young children. It can maim for life or even kill. Very few are lucky like Bob and recover almost unscathed. A new Vaccine is now available that has been improved to help reduce/eliminate outbreaks when Polio morphs.  There are no known side effects at this point.  The goal is to completely eliminate polio by 2026. The Taliban has agreed to allow the Polio Vaccine program to restart in Afghanistan.  They also agreed to allow women to be frontline workers for the effort. This is big news.

By donating $100 a year you or your friends can join the Polio Plus Society. Donators will receive a wristband, certificate and a pin.  All money will be two for one matched by the Gates Foundation making it $300 going to Polio.  Bob has emailed the forms to everyone in the club.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:20pm.

  • Klark is now working with the North Coast Health Improvement and Information Network as a Project Manager.
  • Jim Sessa was recognized because Coast Central Credit Union is one of the nominees in the non-profit category for Rotary’s North Coast Ethics in Business Awards for District 5130.  Coast Central went through extensive interviews with many individuals before receiving the nomination. The recognition is primarily because of support Coast Central gave to the community and members in the community during the pandemic. Klark commented that there were 73 applicants and it was a big deal that CCCU is one of the finalists.
  • Food for People – Carly was recognized for their recent participation in Pastels on the Plaza.

SPEAKER: Carly introduced Neal Carnam. A few years ago, when Carly was President she was looking for a way to apply for a district grant.  She talked to Neal Carnam and things moved forward.  grants and now Neal is going to talk about it.

Neal used the money that was raised by the District Grant and locally from The Rotary Club of Eureka, Mad River Rotary, Old Town Rotary and GHD to build the Tashinam Computer Lab in the Gurashanker Conservation Area in Nepal. This is a village in Nepal that Neal visited in 2013. There was a big earthquake while they were there.

Previously Rotary, with Neal’s guidance, installed a water system for the village and the villagers now have clean water available to them right outside their homes.

The goal for this project was to provide a computer lab to help connect the village to the world and hopefully provide a way for people to stay locally or to communicate with family who have had to leave for employment opportunities. It is a very rural area located at a very high altitude and it takes a lot of stair climbing to get to the village.

Part of the funding was to refurbish the building and build furniture and cabinets.  When the building was finished the village dressed up and provided flower leis and tea to thank them. The villages youth organization will be maintaining and taking care of the computers. There was a little money left and the village is investing that in cash crops – like kiwis and beehives.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:05pm.
