Fred Van Vleck, Superintendent – Eureka City Schools

Eureka City Schools (ECS) is a special place for me. Being a third generation Humboldt County native, coming home five years ago to be the Superintendent of the District was a fantastic opportunity. My father graduated from Eureka High School in 1962 and all three of my children attend a school within Eureka City Schools.

One of the main reasons for moving back to Humboldt County with my family was, and continues to be, the schools within our community. I am proud of the high quality education ECS offers and will be proud to have each of my children graduate from Eureka High School.

Unlike other more urban school districts in the State, ECS offers a small school environment and a variety of options for all students. In California, mid-sized school districts have around 15,000 students, and districts are generally considered small when they have a student enrollment under 5,000. ECS has an enrollment of 3,800 students, and I consider this to be a perfect size. We are large enough to maintain a considerable breadth of quality and diverse programs but small enough to provide a personal touch.
